I was really happy to receive this email about the London Anti-Design Festival. It’s about time someone decided to shake things up a bit and we’re planing on doing our part to help out in any way we can. Read the info below and share with friends, colleagues, collaborators, professors, students, etc., especially those in the UK. Use the image below to re-post, tweet and share. Thanks to Andy for all the hard work and the heads up. We can’t wait to see the results!

–

ANTI DESIGN FESTIVAL
18-26 SEPTEMBER 2010

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

This is a call for submissions for the Anti Design Festival, which will run from 18-26 September on and around Redchurch Street in Shoreditch, London. The ADF is an alternative art and design festival initiated by Neville Brody that promotes work that challenges contemporary stereotypes. This is work that is seen as uncommercial, dangerous, and anti-establishment. For artists, designers, and other creatives this is an opportunity to exhibit work alongside contributors including Jonathan Barnbrook, Stuart Semple, and Stefan Sagmeister.

While we are keeping exhibition details under wraps, we are interested in soliciting creative work that pushes the boundaries of conventional art and design. This is the chance to show previous work that has failed with clients or instructors, or to produce completely new work without the imposition of market restrictions. Because this festival is completely non-profit in orientation, we cannot pay for contributions. However, this is an opportunity for your work to engage a wide audience in a context that will challenge and provoke the public to rethink the role of art and design in contemporary culture.

Submissions can take any form you want, but the bulk of the work should be cheaply made and reproducible so that visitors can take it and use it however they want. You can send us actual printed pieces, but you would have to pay for shipping (email us first to confirm shipping details). Most probably, you would send us PDFs of work that are up to A3 in size (black and white or color) that we can reproduce for you, or digital files to be shown on computers. Here are some suggested formats: Objects/ephemera already produced; PDFs of graphics to be photocopied onto A4 Sheets; Posters; Images or motion graphics to be displayed out of monitors; Sound to be played into headphones

Below is a list of creative prompts we’ve culled to inspire you. Feel free to use them as you’d wish.

If you are interested in contributing, please confirm your participation to andy [at] researchstudios [dot] com by Monday, 19 July. The final due date for all submissions is Friday, 13 August. For more information, please visit www.antidesignfestival.com

Having been fortunate enough to spend some time in Sydney previously I have a deep admiration for all things Australian, including the Sydney Opera House. It’s a truly gorgeous structure and one of the most memorable buildings I may experience in my entire life. That being said I was really blown away when I saw that the city of Sydney invited artist Laurie Anderson to use the Opera House as a canvas for projections in celebration of a winter festival. Anderson had some help from Lou Reed and Brian Eno, which makes the whole thing that much better. I wish I was in Sydney to see the whole thing in person.

The collaborative efforts of both groups has drawn a great roster of speakers, designers, educators, and students together for what is sure to be the largest event yet. Attendees to either of the conferences are able to attend all of the events from either conference, a great value during tough times for sure.

If you’re in the NYC/NJ area the weekend of April 16/17 make sure to come by. There are two FREE sessions, one on each day. See below for more info:

I was blown away when I saw these images of the Seed Cathedral currently under construction in Shanghai. The building will be the centerpiece of the UK Pavilion for the Shanghai Expo, starting May 1, 2010. 60,000 long clear acrylic rods form the outside of the building; at the end of each of the rods seeds have been embedded, creating a massive seed vault that will move in the wind.

Print. HOW. Step. Those are the magazines that most designers/students subscribe to. Not me. While I was in design school I worked in the offices of a furniture retailer and one day the owner’s wife left her copy of Metropolis in the lunch room and so I picked it up. The cover drew me and it appeared interesting enough, “Why Buildings Breath”.

I opened it up and was blown away; architecture, interiors, product design, and then this spread on the typographic design work of Christian Schwartz. I never realized how closely linked all these (seemingly disparate) fields could really be. I subscribed to the magazine for the next 5 years or so.

Recently I came across the design portfolio of Dungjai Pungauthaikan, currently an Art Director at Metropolis, and there is really some nice work in her portfolio. Seeing some of the spreads on her site really brought back a ton of great articles that I read over the years. Editorial design has always interested me greatly, and Dungjai has an impressive ability to organize a lot of information while still allowing the spreads to be visually arresting.

I can’t honestly remember who led me to this, but I remember them saying something about wishing this was their new summer home. I can’t agree more. The Paraty House, in Paraty, Brazil, was designed by Marcio Kogan Architects.

It’s “two reinforced concrete boxes, sit atop each other, connected on the mountainside of one of the islands of the colonial city of Paraty and Angra dos Reis (between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro), like two modern prisms between the large colossal stones of the Brazilian coast.

The building projects outward from the mountain, almost onto the beach, in an 8m cantilever. The house finds balance in the topography of the land, creating an extensive open doorway and living space in the practically untouched nature. Paraty House features a furniture collection showcasing 20thcentury design, including works by many well-known artists.

The residents arrive by boat. After stepping out onto the sand a metallic bridge positioned over a crystal-lined reflecting pool leads to a set of stairs connecting to the lower volume. This volume contains the living room, kitchen and service area. The continual internal area has a 27m span and huge glass windows to take advantage of the view of the sea.

The same entrance stairs also lead to the upper volume that houses the bedrooms. In the front part of the house, retractile panels of eucalyptus sticks protect the bedrooms from the sun. The areas that face the mountain have small internal patios with zenithal lighting, and use exposed reinforced concrete, which grants a striking texture to the walls.

The entire top of the house is covered with terraces, used as observation decks for the residents, and as a garden for sculptures, medicinal plants and edible herbs.” [Via Contemporist]

Yes, as in Philip Johnson’s Glass House.

The Glass House Moleskine® sketchbook features sketches by 29 architects, designers, and artists inspired by the home, quotes by Philip Johnson, and blank pages for notes or sketching. A limited edition notebook, the proceeds from it go to support the preservation and maintenance of Johnson’s famous architectural masterpiece, The Glass House (shown above).

This sketchbook is inspired by the site’s unique power of place, its role as a source of inspiration for architects, designers and artists, and the desire for visitors to pause, look closely, and document their observations as part of their site experience. In this spirit, the Glass House has launched a partnership with Moleskine®, the signature tool for creative minds, to produce a custom sketchbook.

The centerpiece of the notebook is Stephen Doyle’s 3D glass house:
