CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

This is a call for submissions for the Anti Design Festival, which will run from 18-26 September on and around Redchurch Street in Shoreditch, London. The ADF is an alternative art and design festival initiated by Neville Brody that promotes work that challenges contemporary stereotypes. This is work that is seen as uncommercial, dangerous, and anti-establishment. For artists, designers, and other creatives this is an opportunity to exhibit work alongside contributors including Jonathan Barnbrook, Stuart Semple, and Stefan Sagmeister.

While we are keeping exhibition details under wraps, we are interested in soliciting creative work that pushes the boundaries of conventional art and design. This is the chance to show previous work that has failed with clients or instructors, or to produce completely new work without the imposition of market restrictions. Because this festival is completely non-profit in orientation, we cannot pay for contributions. However, this is an opportunity for your work to engage a wide audience in a context that will challenge and provoke the public to rethink the role of art and design in contemporary culture.

Submissions can take any form you want, but the bulk of the work should be cheaply made and reproducible so that visitors can take it and use it however they want. You can send us actual printed pieces, but you would have to pay for shipping (email us first to confirm shipping details). Most probably, you would send us PDFs of work that are up to A3 in size (black and white or color) that we can reproduce for you, or digital files to be shown on computers. Here are some suggested formats: Objects/ephemera already produced; PDFs of graphics to be photocopied onto A4 Sheets; Posters; Images or motion graphics to be displayed out of monitors; Sound to be played into headphones

Below is a list of creative prompts we’ve culled to inspire you. Feel free to use them as you’d wish.

“Off the Wall is an exhibition of the print, motion, site-specific and interactive work of this year’s fifteen MFA candidates in the Graphic Design program at the Yale University School of Art.

Faced with the challenge of presenting their work in a way that celebrates both the individuality of each designer and the spirit of the class as a whole, the students decided to take their work off the walls. In a gesture that reduces the exhibition to its most essential form, all works will be placed on the floor. As the title implies, Off the Wall is unorthodox and intuitive. Instead of grouping the work by maker or medium, it will be arranged loosely, letting visitors make their own links and connections between objects. By presenting their work on the floor, on the same surface that viewers stand, the designers ask the viewers to engage with objects they encounter. Each piece becomes accessible, allowing visitors an opportunity to pick up, read, view and directly experience all works on display.

During Yale’s intense, two-year program, students build a coherent, investigative, and experimental body of work, culminating in a thesis. Though each student’s thesis project expresses a singular methodology, they share common features: the application of a visual method to studio work and the writing and design of a catalogue raisonné. Alongside designers’ print, video, and interactive work, Off the Wall will feature the fifteen thesis books, which contextualize the designers’ work in relation to their emerging practices.”

I’m very jealous of my friends who already have tickets to a Jónsi show in the area, but this made things even worse. Fifty Nine Productions shares what they’ve got in store for the set design and performance aspects of Jónsi’s new tour.

-WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
Brooklyn, New York. Hush Studios is in DUMBO, and I live near the Brooklyn Museum.

-WHAT DOES YOUR WORK CONSIST OF?
I am the Director of Interactive at HUSH. Hush Studios is a New York-based creative studio conceiving and developing powerful brand-driven stories, award winning design, animation, and film for TV, Internet, and Mobile. In other words, the work takes the on form of live action, flash applications, and animation.

-HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started working in the interactive field during the mid-nineties, and have had the honor of working at a handful of the best studios around. David & Erik (partners at Hush) have their roots in motion, 3D, and live action production. Together we make HUSH what it is today.

-WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
The best thing about what I do is having the opportunity to work with so many talented people.

-WHAT IS THE WORST THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
There just are not enough hours in the day to do everything!

-IF YOU WEREN’T IN DIGITAL, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?
If I wasn’t working in Digital I would be creating analog works of art. I miss painting and mixed media artwork. I will use this interview to remind myself to “make” more physical stuff!

-WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I am inspired by Technology, Art, Design, Television, and Nature.

-WHERE DOES CREATIVITY COME FROM?
Creativity comes from so many places. Some days it is observations everyday life, some days it comes from seeing work around the web. Part of my job at Hush Studios is to stay one step ahead of the curve. I scour the web via twitter, and a collection of blogs that focus on technology, emerging platforms, as well as art & design.

-WHO’S WORK DO YOU LOOK UP TO? (Either currently or in the past)
There are a few filmmakers like Spike Jonze, Terri Timely, and Wes Anderson whom I look up to as narrative storytellers, and on the interactive front I have always respected on the work of Yugo Nakamura

-WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE FOR YOUR INDUSTRY?
I am so excited for the future. Everyday we (as an industry) make progress, everyday someone takes an existing model and improves it. “Life moves pretty fast, if you do not stop an look around once and a while, you might miss it.” – Ferris Bueller

-WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU NEXT?

-WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR FIELD ASPIRING TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
My advice would be to do what you love.

-ONE DEFINING MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR.
In 2008 I started directing live-action specifically for the internet. The idea of combining live action and 3D was always something I pushed for, and it was awesome to be involved in the whole process of pre-production; Script and Character development, Wardrobe, props, and styling are all very interesting to me. I love crafting narrative, and having so much control over what is on the screen is very rewarding. (See: http://vimeo.com/7195348) I truly believe we have that magic formula of balancing these disciplines working for us here at HUSH. The future looks bright.

-WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?

This year marks the 7th annual Thinking Creatively Design Conference, held at Kean University. The conference this year includes a wide-ranging panel of speakers and is being held alongside the IDSA Conference, also at Kean this year. The collaborative efforts of both groups has drawn a great roster of speakers, designers, educators, and students together for what is sure to be the largest event yet. Attendees to either of the conferences are able to attend all of the events from either conference, a great value during tough times for sure.

If you’re in the NYC/NJ area the weekend of April 16/17 make sure to come by. There are two FREE sessions, one on each day. See below for more info:

I’m Here by Spike Jonze is a short film about two robots falling in love in LA. Aside from the story being extremely beautiful and touching, the experience of the website is interesting as well. Set up as a movie theatre, there is a seat capacity! Or if you prefer, you can check it out on youtube too…But DO make sure you check it out!!

Our good friend Mike Cooke over at Mikedesigns recently finished a short film he put together called life presently and shot in Atlanta.. Mike is definitely one of the nicest guys and hardest workers I know, his work is constantly evolving in both film making and photography and is always doing something new, keep up with him and his work on his site HERE

check out the oscar winning short film Logorama HERE this fulm is really uses some genius ways picking apart what we know as brands to create an interesting storyline.

Kanye launched his new blog a few days back, go check it out. I’m always glad to see someone doing something different.

UK illustrator Nicholas Saunders is a lucky guy. He was given the opportunity to work for 4 months on the graphics and packaging that were used in the “Weasley Joke Shop” scene for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. He was able to come up with names for the products and all of the artwork that was then produced by hand into packaging for the production.

Our good friends over at Thinking For a Living™ have just re-launched their site! The new site makes good use of some innovative navigational techniques and has a slew of great resources, articles, links and more. Make sure to check them out and visit often.

HBO recently released the pilot episode of its new series “How to Make it in America” on Youtube today. The show debuts This Sunday February 14th at 10PM. Im really interested in seeing how this show pans out, its another Mark Wahlberg show so it should be interesting.. check it out HERE

I’m going to be completely honest, I think the iPad is the stupidest name for a device that seems to be pretty cool. Then again, I doubt the name matters all that much, just look at the iPod right? I’ll skip this one, since it’s pretty obvious [laughs].

-WHAT DOES YOUR WORK CONSIST OF?

My day to day job consist of working at Standard boutique in Atlanta, I created and run the standardatl.com for the most part which has gotten much attention in its short existence. I also work with Don Cannon doing whatever needs to be done, and once and every blue moon I’ll contribute to antennamag.com.

-HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

Once upon a time I was was big on sneakers and I worked at Nike-Town for around a year, after being somewhat of a loyal customer there, a position opened up and I was presented with the opportunity to work at Standard. I’ve been with Standard for 3 years, working there has opened many doors for me to do many of the things I have done, and will do.

I love previewing the new lines before they drop. There is always excitement in being the first, or apart of the first, to see what new sneakers, cloths, and accessories are suppose to drop in the future seasons.

Anyone can find things they don’t like about their life or job. I try to focus on the good things.

-IF YOU WEREN’T _________, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

Who knows? Literally, I would have never guessed I would be doing the things I’m doing, and knowing the people I know at this point in my life.

-WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Respect is what inspires me. No matter what I do in life, I want to be respected. Being successful, being financially set, those are givens, but being respected by others is the main thing I aim to gain in pretty much everything I do.

-WHERE DOES CREATIVITY COME FROM?

My life, my experiences, my relationships, where I grew up, basketball, movies, music. There are so many things that spark and create my creativity.

There are many people out there that I respect for what they do. But, currently I look up to a friend of mines work, Levi Maestro. He created a whole new way of showing other creative people through his show. It’s new, refreshing, informative, and good! Through his accomplishments he still remains one of the most humble people I know.

-WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE FOR YOUR INDUSTRY?

I have no idea, like I said there are so many opportunities out there and Im sure they will grow and multiply.

-WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU NEXT?

Honestly, I don’t know what to expect from me, I just take life as it happens and act accordingly, but just know that somehow it will be documented.

-WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR FIELD ASPIRING TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

Put your head down and work your ass off. Life is a never ending challenge, and those that make it to the top are the same people that are never satisfied with their work.

Yet to happen, but it’s coming. Know that.

-WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?

As far as new artist go I really enjoy Pill, his latest mix-tape is a instant classic (4075: The Refill). J. Cole is another favorite of mine. Of course my shameless plug would be my brother’s band Ponderosa. Oh and I can’t forget my big homie Mikkey Halsted, I’ve been lucky enough to preview some of his songs off of his album, (not yet out) Chicago: The Photo Album, I’m a fan big fan of his music. There are others, but I don’t want to make the list too long.

I have been doing nothing but watching these as of late. What a great idea, we have started a new Good Folk series of interviews along the same lines and we can’t wait to sure them with you all.

Invisible Children is a project i came across the otherday started by some really dedicated filmmakers  : Motivated by the unseen war in Northern Uganda, Invisible Children was created by three young filmmakers with a singular mission: To use the power of stories to change lives around the world.

As we posted earlier in the week we picked up a Canon 7D and have been playing around with it a little bit..  here is a little video we shot this week in about 20 mins playing with the settings a little..  more to come…

Last week we copped the new Canon 7D to shoot what ever we need from product shots to random goodness, but most of all we got it to help shoot our upcoming GOODFOLK video episodes.. so stay tuned for the goodness…

I read about this project a few months ago and have been eagerly awaiting for it to come out. Spike Jonze has been one of my biggest influences as a creative person for all of his work in the music industry and skate industry.. With his work on Where the Wild Things Are hopefully he will finally get the recognition that hes deserved for a long time, but until then, check out this project he did with Kanye West titled We Were Once A Fairytale

A3C Hip Hop festival was held a few weeks ago in the heart of Atlanta.. As time has past i have been seeing more pictures and footage from it and just came across this edit that our good friend and partner in our GOODFOLK film series (coming soon) Mike Cooke put out that really embodies the feel of the festival.  keep up the good work mike!

Maestro Knows is a dope series put together by Levi Maestro. recently he took a trip to the Nike Campus to check it and take a look around.. a prime example of why nike is so far ahead of everyone else.

Check out the music video for Drake’s new song “Forever”, directed by Hype Williams. The track, which features verses from Kanye West, ‘Lil Wayne and Eminem, will be part of the soundtrack for the LeBron James documentary More Than A Game.

DesignPhiladelphia: October 07 – 13, 2009

Moving into its fifth year, DesignPhiladelphia is the largest national celebration of its kind. This city-wide cultural event spotlights all things design from architecture to interior design, fashion to product design, textile to graphic design. It’s a journey exploring exhibitions, workshops, studio tours, lectures, special events and product roll-outs that inspire, engage, excite and delight.

With a new trend of “design Documentaries”  and other films such as Objectified and Helvetica by Gary Hustwit and shows like Emmy and Golden Globe winning AMC series Mad Men focusing on design and advertising, it is evident that the interest in these fields and educating the world about our craft is becoming more and more important. “People are paying more attention and are becoming more in tune with design and advertising in america” one film goer said.

Art and Copy by Doug Pray (Surfwise,Scratch, and HYPE!)  takes us behind the scenes and tells the stories and sheds a much needed light on some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time. Featuring the likes of George Lois, David Kennedy, Lee Clow, Jeff Goodby and many more This film is a must see! Its a hard nose take on the way things work in advertising and really communicates how powerful design, advertising, and the strategies we make really are. They captured so many different personalities within the AD industry that have made their mark and covered some classic campaigns from Nike’s “Just Do It” to “Got Milk?” and how Tommy Hilfiger became a household name through advertising.  The film was inspiring and motivational for me personally, to see these classic admen and women such as George Lois and Lee Clow speak from their heart about what we do is really powerful.

Destino is a short animated cartoon released in 2003 by The Walt Disney Company. Destino is unique in that its production originally began in 1945, 58 years before its eventual completion. The project was a collaboration between American animator Walt Disney and Spanish painter Salvador Dalí, and features music written by Mexican songwriter Armando Dominguez.

As a designer I find a tremendous amount of inspiration from projects like this, that are the collaborative result of fine art and popular culture. I think that it’s a shame it took 60 years for something of this magnitude to come to public light. I can’t wait for the documentary to be released next year.

Oh, and I’ve been following along with Spike Jonze’s blog We Love You So, I highly recommend it.
