I was really happy to receive this email about the London Anti-Design Festival. It’s about time someone decided to shake things up a bit and we’re planing on doing our part to help out in any way we can. Read the info below and share with friends, colleagues, collaborators, professors, students, etc., especially those in the UK. Use the image below to re-post, tweet and share. Thanks to Andy for all the hard work and the heads up. We can’t wait to see the results!

–

ANTI DESIGN FESTIVAL
18-26 SEPTEMBER 2010

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

This is a call for submissions for the Anti Design Festival, which will run from 18-26 September on and around Redchurch Street in Shoreditch, London. The ADF is an alternative art and design festival initiated by Neville Brody that promotes work that challenges contemporary stereotypes. This is work that is seen as uncommercial, dangerous, and anti-establishment. For artists, designers, and other creatives this is an opportunity to exhibit work alongside contributors including Jonathan Barnbrook, Stuart Semple, and Stefan Sagmeister.

While we are keeping exhibition details under wraps, we are interested in soliciting creative work that pushes the boundaries of conventional art and design. This is the chance to show previous work that has failed with clients or instructors, or to produce completely new work without the imposition of market restrictions. Because this festival is completely non-profit in orientation, we cannot pay for contributions. However, this is an opportunity for your work to engage a wide audience in a context that will challenge and provoke the public to rethink the role of art and design in contemporary culture.

Submissions can take any form you want, but the bulk of the work should be cheaply made and reproducible so that visitors can take it and use it however they want. You can send us actual printed pieces, but you would have to pay for shipping (email us first to confirm shipping details). Most probably, you would send us PDFs of work that are up to A3 in size (black and white or color) that we can reproduce for you, or digital files to be shown on computers. Here are some suggested formats: Objects/ephemera already produced; PDFs of graphics to be photocopied onto A4 Sheets; Posters; Images or motion graphics to be displayed out of monitors; Sound to be played into headphones

Below is a list of creative prompts we’ve culled to inspire you. Feel free to use them as you’d wish.

If you are interested in contributing, please confirm your participation to andy [at] researchstudios [dot] com by Monday, 19 July. The final due date for all submissions is Friday, 13 August. For more information, please visit www.antidesignfestival.com

Late last year some prints done by Andy Warhol for his friend Richard Weisman were stolen from the owner’s home. The actual Polaroids that Warhol took, which inspired the prints themselves went on display at Danziger Projects last year in an exhibit titled Greatness. They capture some really amazing sports stars like Wayne Gretzky, Muhammad Ali, Pelé and O.J. Simpson. Here’s some more info:

“In 1977, Richard Weisman, an art collector and a friend of Warhol’s, commissioned a series of paintings of ten great sports figures of the era, now known as the “Athlete Series”. The group of athletes was selected by Mr. Weisman, and included stars of a variety of sports: Muhammad Ali (boxing), Pelé (soccer), Dorothy Hamill (figure skating), Tom Seaver (baseball), Jack Nicklaus (golf), O.J. Simpson (football), Chris Evert (tennis), Willie Shoemaker (horse racing), Rod Gilbert (ice hockey, NY Rangers), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (basketball).

Four additional sports portraits taken later are also included in the show – Ron Duguay, John McEnroe (with then-wife Tatum O’Neill), Vitas Gerulaitis, and Wayne Gretzky.

While Warhol may not have selected the ten athletes for the series, their status as champions in their respective sports, with faces and names that are recognizable decades later, coincides with Warhol’s interest in images of celebrity and greatness.

Taken with Warhol’s favored “Big Shot” Polaroid Camera, these images were used by Warhol to be silkscreened on to canvas as the basis of each painting.”

1156 Chapel Street, New Haven CT 06511

–

From the Press Release:

“Off the Wall is an exhibition of the print, motion, site-specific and interactive work of this year’s fifteen MFA candidates in the Graphic Design program at the Yale University School of Art.

Faced with the challenge of presenting their work in a way that celebrates both the individuality of each designer and the spirit of the class as a whole, the students decided to take their work off the walls. In a gesture that reduces the exhibition to its most essential form, all works will be placed on the floor. As the title implies, Off the Wall is unorthodox and intuitive. Instead of grouping the work by maker or medium, it will be arranged loosely, letting visitors make their own links and connections between objects. By presenting their work on the floor, on the same surface that viewers stand, the designers ask the viewers to engage with objects they encounter. Each piece becomes accessible, allowing visitors an opportunity to pick up, read, view and directly experience all works on display.

During Yale’s intense, two-year program, students build a coherent, investigative, and experimental body of work, culminating in a thesis. Though each student’s thesis project expresses a singular methodology, they share common features: the application of a visual method to studio work and the writing and design of a catalogue raisonné. Alongside designers’ print, video, and interactive work, Off the Wall will feature the fifteen thesis books, which contextualize the designers’ work in relation to their emerging practices.”

I recently came across this interview with photographer Francois Robert and I was immediately drawn to look up more of his work. Come to find out that I’ve definitely seen some of it before, even in some of the books that I own. In fact, Francois is quite a well-known photography, so much so that here’s what Massimo Vignelli has to say about him:

Working with Francois has always been a lot of fun.
First, he understands the briefing.
Second, he adds to it in a brilliant way.
Third, he shoots and delivers the assignment on time.
Fourth, the work turns out to be better than it was planned.
Fifth, he is a terrific photographer.
Sixth, he is a great human being.
Seventh, he is an equally good graphic designer.
Eighth, he is great fun.
Ninth, he has a cool sense of humor.
Tenth, is great to work with.

Need to say anything more?
Massimo Vignelli, New York

Go check him out, I especially love the fine art series Francois has created, title “Stop the Violence” (shown above).

-NAME
Alex Cornell

-WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I am from Bethesda, Maryland. I usually say Washington DC because most people don’t know what Maryland is. I live in San Francisco now, having switched coasts, much to the dismay of my family.

-WHAT DOES YOUR WORK CONSIST OF?
My work is divided into music and design. Most of the work I am doing these days is graphic design related, much of it for school assignments. I do a lot of freelance as well and the periodic personal project. I did a painting the other day—my first—and it was rather terrible. All combined together, I do design, music, film, and photography.

-HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I got into graphic design about 2.5 years ago when I moved to San Francisco. Prior to that, I was a Psychology major focused on becoming famous as a musician. I was in a band and did a lot of the visual branding materials for shows and etc. This was how I got into design and learned that it was actually a profession. I knew absolutely nothing about it though, so I decided to go to school; I enrolled in the Academy of Art MFA Design program here in SF when I moved. I started working for ISO50 about 2 years ago as well, which has been a terrific experience. I wouldn’t say that this process is over though—I definitely still consider myself “getting started”.

-WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
It’s hard to beat the feeling of creating something that you love out of nothing. There is a quote that I like, forget where it’s from, but it says, “All I want to be is someone who makes new things and thinks about them.” So there’s that, but my favorite thing is really crushing a guitar solo. The feeling of playing a really well executed guitar solo live is probably the best feeling in the world. Followed closely by singing in general. Design is great though, the victories are just more spread out over a longer creative process.

[youtube ON4srpchNRk]

-WHAT IS THE WORST THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
Crippling depression when I can’t break through a creative wall. Not ‘actual’ depression, but a real feeling of periodic helplessness when the ideas aren’t coming. My mood is heavily correlated to my creative output, which can be problematic. That said, I usually need to reevaluate what I’ve done in a particular day and not hold an impossible standard for a good creative day—my conception of a “productive” day is a little distorted.

-IF YOU WEREN’T (fill in the blank), WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?
If I weren’t a designer I would be a musician. If I weren’t a musician I would be a designer. If I weren’t either of these things I would be a photographer or a fashion designer. I am also curious how one becomes a “socialite”.

-WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Great work by other people simultaneously inspires me and scares the shit out of me. If I spend 20min looking through a design book for example, I will become very inspired and also intimidated. This combination of excitement and terror usually gets me to do something cool. Pretty much anyone that has done something unique and exciting will get my creative heart beating. I watched Ken Robinson talk about education the other day and his unbelievable public speaking ability inspired me to finish the logo for my thesis project.

-WHERE DOES CREATIVITY COME FROM?
Different for everyone obviously. For me it usually comes out of frustration with my own ideas. If I’m not excited about something I’m doing, I try and think what I would need to change to get re-psyched about it.

-WHO’S WORK DO YOU LOOK UP TO? (Either currently or in the past)
Scott Hansen (ISO50), first and foremost always. Also Kalle Gustafsson, Tom Ford, Michel Gondry, Molly Young, John Mayer and Deth. P Sun. There are of course many others, but that’s a good sample. Most of the people I look to for inspiration aren’t graphic designers.

-WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE FOR YOUR INDUSTRY?
It’s funny you say “your” industry. I still don’t really feel IN this industry. I contribute to it I suppose, but I still feel like a casual observer. I think this is because I have only been swimming in this space for a couple years. So what is next? Hmm. More motion graphics, or perhaps better stated, graphics in motion.

-WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU NEXT?
Right now I’m working on my thesis project and a small lifestyle brand with my friends. Both projects are in a fairly nascent stage right now, but should be moving forward soon. I also just opened up a small little shop on my website. Over the next few months I will be adding a lot more products; some more shirts, photography prints, and some other bits and bobs.

-WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR FIELD ASPIRING TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
If you are a student, try and think outside of the walls of the classroom. That is to say, don’t just complete the assignment for the class and the grade. The grade especially matters very little in the grand scheme of things. You should instead focus on how you can make work that is exciting to you (and hopefully everyone else). That is the criteria that matters to me. I still haven’t looked at my report card from last semester.

-ONE DEFINING MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR.
When I started working over at ISO50, that pretty much changed everything. I had absolutely no clue about anything when I moved out here and jumped into the design world. Working for Scott over these last couple years has informed just about every part of my creative perspective.

-WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?
It sounds like the construction workers next door are trying to tunnel into my office. Also my washing machine sounds like it’s trying to go into orbit. Besides that I am listening to:
Jon Hopkins “Light Through the Veins”
John Mayer “Lifelines” (from Eddie’s Attic 1999)
Calvin Harris “Flashback”
Janelle Monae “Tightrope”
Cinnamon Chasers “Candle Lights”
Kings of Convenience “Cayman Islands”

This year marks the 7th annual Thinking Creatively Design Conference, held at Kean University. The conference this year includes a wide-ranging panel of speakers and is being held alongside the IDSA Conference, also at Kean this year. The collaborative efforts of both groups has drawn a great roster of speakers, designers, educators, and students together for what is sure to be the largest event yet. Attendees to either of the conferences are able to attend all of the events from either conference, a great value during tough times for sure.

If you’re in the NYC/NJ area the weekend of April 16/17 make sure to come by. There are two FREE sessions, one on each day. See below for more info:

-NAME

Tom Medvedich

-WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I was born and raised in Northern New Jersey. I went to college in Santa Barbara, California and lived in LA for a year after that. I decided to move back to reality three years ago.

-WHAT DOES YOUR WORK CONSIST OF?

I currently have a body of work that includes both still life as well as portraiture. I have a lot of hip hop artists in my book, and I plan on diversifying this year by shooting more celebrity and fashion influenced portraiture. I also love shooting when I travel, whether it’s street portraits, intimate/personal moments, or just capturing the locale. I’m working on creating a book of all of my travel photography. I’m also working on some other personal projects like my lip tattoo portrait series and a project called FRIENDLY FIRE. FF shows the wide range of my social network from friends who are super straight laced and religious all the way to a friend who’s had a sex change. I feel like personal work is very important because it allows you to truly create something for yourself without having to consider anyone else.

-HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

I took a photography class in high school because it seemed interesting, and honestly I just wanted an easy class. I ended up failing it the first time because I went off the beaten path and did my own thing. So I ended up retaking it my senior year and I loved it even more because I had a head start haha. I then decided against my teachers advice to make a career out of it (you were wrong, Mr. G!). I went to Brooks Institute in California and graduated with a BFA in photography.

-WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

Having my own company and doing only what I want to do. That is above all. Being independent is the most important thing in the world to me. I definitely love meeting new people, so that’s a huge benefit of the business. This is especially true because I often meet likeminded people who are creative and constantly inspire me on so many levels. Also, traveling is great. I had to throw that in there!

-WHAT IS THE WORST THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

The worst thing has got to be that, at this stage in the game, I’m running the whole business myself. It’s all good and fine; I like knowing everything that’s going on, but it honestly just feels like there’s not enough hours in the day a lot of the time. Ideally, I would clone myself and have the clone run the business side so I could just shoot and retouch.

-IF YOU WEREN’T A PHOTOGRAPHER, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

I really think I would be doing something behind the scenes with music… most likely production.

-WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Life. There’s inspiration in everything. I get a lot of my ideas in the shower… Sometimes from dreams… I just think a lot. Probably way too much.

-WHERE DOES CREATIVITY COME FROM?

That’s a good question. I’m obviously a visual person, but when I see things in my mind, they’re always just wacked out a little bit. Take the Jordans on my website for instance ( which you can see at www.tommedvedich.com ! ) – this was my first editorial job in NYC. I was told to “shoot on white and make them pop”. I loved how Stephen gave me the freedom to do what I wanted. As soon as I started to think about the sneakers, the vision of floating laces popped into my head. It’s great when things just click like that. Shout out to Stephen Schuster by the way!

-WHO’S WORK DO YOU LOOK UP TO? (Either currently or in the past)

If I had to choose only one photographer, it would have to be Avedon. Those midwest portraits he did are just unbelievably amazing to me. I really wish I could’ve met him before he passed just to tell him thank you for the inspiration. I also love Scorsese films. The visuals he provided in so many movies are just so inspirational and powerful. Casino is my favorite movie ever. The scene out in the desert… when tensions get thick? Woooo! Classic!

-WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE FOR YOUR INDUSTRY?

Well, just like any other industry, photography has been hit by the recession. It’s great in a way because it weeds a lot of dead weight out. Also, I’ve noticed that people are more interested in photographers that can shoot a range of subjects, like people AND still life. For a long time, people would always tell me I would never get work with still life and rappers on my site. Last year I ended up doing a 23 country Malibu Rum campaign as well as shooting images for Raekwon’s OB4CL Pt II. It’s great a great situation; I would hate to be pigeon-holed. And as far as budget cuts and all that, things will bounce back. Things come in waves.

-WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU NEXT?

You can expect me shooting big ad jobs soon! Also, you can look for some interesting images of girls in my portfolio soon… I don’t want to give it away, but just keep your eyes peeled. I’m also going to get more into video this year. I really would love to direct some music videos because I have a very deep love for music.

-WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR FIELD ASPIRING TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

Do what you love and expect it to take up every second of your day from the moment you wake up until the moment your eyelids collapse on your bloodshot eyeballs.

-ONE DEFINING MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR.

Shooting Spike Lee was a huge moment for me. To have a living legend show me the respect that he did really means a lot to me. Other notable moments for me were my first celebrity cover (Busta Rhymes), and an amazing conversation with Pharrell.

-WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?

Rick Ross, City and Colour, Kanye (pre 808s), Minus The Bear, and my man H2-O!

1. TeuxDeux is a simple, designy, free, browser-based to-do application via SwissMiss.

3. Starting way back in July, Carolyn Sewel began a year-long project to send her parents a postcard every day, see the set on Flickr. They’re amazing!

4. I’m so glad my friend sent me this link: 389.com – Prepare to be amazed.

5. Check out this YouTube video of Yann Tiersen playing piano on six iPhones.

6. Tokujin Yoshioka’s window display for Hermés in Japan is mind-blowingly poetic.

7. OK Go and their crazy laser shooting guitars and performance at Design Miami via Cool Hunting.

8. TheStraightDope.com – Fighting ignorance since 1973 (It’s taking longer than we thought)

Our sincerest apologies for not posting much these last few weeks. Msenna and myself have been occupied by other matters, namely the formation of the Proper Villains Collective. Aside from that I think we’ve both been really busy working on other projects and initiatives. I myself have been preparing to teach a college course on the History of Visual Communications this Fall. This is the first time I’ll be doing any teaching and I’m incredibly excited, anxious, and, somewhat, overwhelmed by the prospect of it.

Please forgive us and accept these meager links to interesting things I’ve come across this week:
Puerto Rico Illustrado mastheads via my friend Alberto Rigau’s blog.
Amazing work by Studio Ten and a Half.
Whoa. Skateboard typography.
Industrial designer Sam Hecht of Industrial Facility.
Bugs + street light + long exposure = Awesome
Pijama makes great cases for laptops, phones, iPods, etc.

A new site by Jonathan Harris was just launched today, The Sputnik Observatory. Go check it out now!

From the site: Sputnik Observatory is a New York not-for-profit educational organization dedicated to the study of contemporary culture. We fulfill this mission by documenting, archiving, and disseminating ideas that are shaping modern thought by interviewing leading thinkers in the arts, sciences and technology from around the world. Our philosophy is that ideas are NOT selfish, ideas are NOT viruses. Ideas survive because they fit in with the rest of life. Our position is that ideas are energy, and should interconnect and re-connect continuously because by linking ideas together we learn, and new ideas emerge.

Our goal is to encourage life-long learning, and we have created this website as a portal of possibilities. A democratic space where people can listen and engage with ideas that inform contemporary history. Ideas that we believe will empower everyone to be a part of today’s cultural conversation.

Sputnik Observatory was established in 2003 by the principals of Sputnik Inc. who dedicated their own resources to self-fund the launch of this website. We hope your experience ignites discussion and you join us in the effort to collectively imagine and re-imagine our world. Please visit often, discover new avenues of exploration, and share what you want, when you want.

The word “Sputnik” means fellow traveler. We look forward to venturing on this voyage together.

Ideas are energy.
Your brain is a satellite.
Out there is your mind.
