All I can say is I want to work for SvB soooooo bad. Ridiculous. Amazing, Beautiful. They make it look so easy.

I recently came across this interview with photographer Francois Robert and I was immediately drawn to look up more of his work. Come to find out that I’ve definitely seen some of it before, even in some of the books that I own. In fact, Francois is quite a well-known photography, so much so that here’s what Massimo Vignelli has to say about him:

Working with Francois has always been a lot of fun.

Second, he adds to it in a brilliant way.

Matthew Anderson (A.K.A. Ampersanderson) is a Brooklyn-based designer who’s work in web, print and identity design is beautifully executed. I especially love the packaging he designed for Miss Jessie’s, shown above. Loads of type on that bottle and very nicely handled might I add.

Brooklyn, New York. Hush Studios is in DUMBO, and I live near the Brooklyn Museum.

-WHAT DOES YOUR WORK CONSIST OF?
I am the Director of Interactive at HUSH. Hush Studios is a New York-based creative studio conceiving and developing powerful brand-driven stories, award winning design, animation, and film for TV, Internet, and Mobile. In other words, the work takes the on form of live action, flash applications, and animation.

-HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started working in the interactive field during the mid-nineties, and have had the honor of working at a handful of the best studios around. David & Erik (partners at Hush) have their roots in motion, 3D, and live action production. Together we make HUSH what it is today.

-WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
The best thing about what I do is having the opportunity to work with so many talented people.

-WHAT IS THE WORST THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
There just are not enough hours in the day to do everything!

-IF YOU WEREN’T IN DIGITAL, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?
If I wasn’t working in Digital I would be creating analog works of art. I miss painting and mixed media artwork. I will use this interview to remind myself to “make” more physical stuff!

-WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I am inspired by Technology, Art, Design, Television, and Nature.

-WHERE DOES CREATIVITY COME FROM?
Creativity comes from so many places. Some days it is observations everyday life, some days it comes from seeing work around the web. Part of my job at Hush Studios is to stay one step ahead of the curve. I scour the web via twitter, and a collection of blogs that focus on technology, emerging platforms, as well as art & design.

-WHO’S WORK DO YOU LOOK UP TO? (Either currently or in the past)
There are a few filmmakers like Spike Jonze, Terri Timely, and Wes Anderson whom I look up to as narrative storytellers, and on the interactive front I have always respected on the work of Yugo Nakamura

-WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE FOR YOUR INDUSTRY?
I am so excited for the future. Everyday we (as an industry) make progress, everyday someone takes an existing model and improves it. “Life moves pretty fast, if you do not stop an look around once and a while, you might miss it.” – Ferris Bueller

-WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU NEXT?

-WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR FIELD ASPIRING TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
My advice would be to do what you love.

-ONE DEFINING MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR.
In 2008 I started directing live-action specifically for the internet. The idea of combining live action and 3D was always something I pushed for, and it was awesome to be involved in the whole process of pre-production; Script and Character development, Wardrobe, props, and styling are all very interesting to me. I love crafting narrative, and having so much control over what is on the screen is very rewarding. (See: http://vimeo.com/7195348) I truly believe we have that magic formula of balancing these disciplines working for us here at HUSH. The future looks bright.

-WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?
Miike Snow

I was fortunate enough to meet Jan Wilker (one half of karlssonwilker) at the Princeton Design Conference this past weekend. He’s an all-around spectacular guy and a smooth talker too. That being said I feel like I couldn’t possibly mention his name without also noting the summer workshop he’s running with Paul Sahre and James Victore. I believe this is the third year that the “Tremendous Trio” (yep, I made that up all by myself) are doing their thang. Go check it out and get on the mailing list, then sign up.

A few years back I had the pleasure of hearing Deborah Adler speak at the Thinking Creatively design conference while I was a student. She was riding high on the recent success of her redesign for prescription medication packaging, specifically the bottle of pills you get when you fill a prescription at a local pharmacy. Target picked up the idea and worked with Deborah collaboratively to bring the system to market. It was an instant success.

I remember her lecture very vividly, she was then working at Milton Glaser Inc., and it became clear to me then as a student that designers could really do something valuable with their ideas. Looks like Ms. Adler is now running her own operation in NYC, Deborah Adler Design, and doing some nice work too.

The only thing I can say about these images is that you need to see them for yourself. Amazing stuff…that’s all I got.

Some people just like to have fun.

Recently found out about Areaware, a design company in NYC that manufacturers and distributes some really nice products. The artwork and goods are designed by pretty nice roster of industrial designers. The wooden flashlight above really caught my attention.

Rami Moghadam is a designer at Pentagram’s New York office under partner Luke Hayman. Rami’s site has some really great work on it like the above minimal identity design for Pont-Aven School for Contemporary Art.

Steve Haslip is a designer from the UK that recently finished his MFA at the School of Visual Arts. I love his portfolio, especially the work he did for the Dirty Weekend series of workshops, his thesis project.

I’m so glad that Alexandra Witjas sent us a message about her portfolio site. I had come across her work before and was a big fan, in fact I had it bookmarked so I could post it on here! Alex recently graduated from Pratt and is now hard at work for Mike Perry Studio. Check out her illustrations and such, just gorgeous.

NYC designer Deanne Cheuk might have one of the most expansive and diverse portfolios around. Originally hailing from Australia, her work has found it’s way into magazines, on t-shirts, snowboards, bags, textiles, plates, cups, sneakers and more! She’s art directed magazines, designed sunglasses and toys—it’s like every thing touches turns to gold! In 2006, Target even launched a line of her products!

Some designers’ work is so good that it makes me cry at night, forcing me to think about leaving the field to become a customer service rep or something. (No disrespect to CSRs by the way, thank you for all your help. You make the world a better place, truly—you do.) This guy is one of those designers. Michael Winterdale Schnepf is a RISD graduate who’s been at Pentagram and is now a designer for MOMA. How cool must it be to be part of the design team at MOMA!?

Dreamers Ink Aesthetics is the online portfolio of Mitchell Paone. Paone’s creative work crosses the disciplines of design, fine art, music and film. Beautiful stuff, check out his reel above.

One of my favorite studios right now is Project Projects. Their work makes up an impressive collection of websites, exhibits, books, identities and environments. Their work is consistently effective in it’s communication and aesthetic. I think that what they do best is focus on the message behind every project, rather than attempting to dress it in some trendy graphics or type. Smart and beautiful, that’s it. Must be why they were named finalists in this year’s National Design Awards by the Cooper-Hewitt.

Moby’s new album, Wait for Me, drops on June 30th. Gotta say I can’t wait to get it. Moby is such a creative inspiration for me personally and I always get the feeling that he really pours himself into his music and strives to create the best art possible.

Rumors is a multi-disciplinary design collective based in Brooklyn and formed by Holly Gressley, Renda Morton, and Andy Pressman.

August Heffner is a graphic designer, art director and illustrator living in Brooklyn, New York. Between 2004-2007 he worked directly under his design heroes Matteo Bologna at Mucca Design and Stephen Doyle at Doyle Partners. His work is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

Benita Raphan is a designer, an art director, a photo-illustrator and a filmmaker. She has worked in London, Paris and in New York City. Raphan received her MA(RCA) from the Royal College of Art in London and her BFA from the School of Visual Arts. Previously Benita taught graduate thesis students at New York University, the Center for Advanced Digital Applications. She is currently a faculty member at the School of Visual Arts.

Doyle Partners just designed a new logo for the Cooper Union. Check out a video of the logo and read what Steve Heller has to say about it. My personal opinion: it’s amazing, but I happen to love everything Doyle Partners touches.

Typographer and book artist Russell Maret will be appearing at the Type Directors Club in 2 weeks. If you don’t about his amazing letterpress books than I’m so very sorry for you. More info here.

Homeboy Nicholas Felton (AKA mgfn) has an amazing ability to organize information and design spectacular visuals from them, especially for editorial projects. I love his work and you should too, he’s based in NYC and has done work for New York Magazine, Esquire, Fast Company, NY Times, Metropolis, Print and Wired Magazine. Whoa, that’s one amazing laundry list of clients.

Just found out that a book I did the cover for was reviewed in the Holiday Gift Guide/Books section of the NY Times! It printed in the NYC edition on November 28th, 2008 so if anyone out there has a copy please let me know. The book is “BLACK: the History of a Color” by Michel Pastoureau.

Roanne Adams has such an amazing portfolio I found it difficult to decide which project to display on this post. All of her work is stunning, in this sort of sensitive and subtle way that makes you wish you had thought of it first. Her portfolio possesses an amazing sense of craftsmanship and attention to detail. Love the presentation format of her website too, clever. No wonder she was named a New Visual Artist by Print Magazine in 2006.

So I know this is nothing new, but I was just looking around Ryan McGinness’ site (it’s been awhile) and came across these skate decks I had never seen before. They were done back in ’99, almost a decade ago! If you’ve never heard of him you’ve been living under a rock because Mr. McGinness is a well-known artist in NYC that’s been putting out crazy stuff for years.
